Gold karats explained: 24K vs 22K vs 21K vs 18K
A simple guide to what karat means, how much gold each karat contains, and which suits investment or jewellery.
What does karat mean?
Karat measures pure gold content out of 24 parts. 24K is almost pure gold (99.9%), while 21K means 21 of 24 parts are gold, about 87.5%, with the rest alloy metals that add strength.
24K
The purest and most expensive per gram, mainly used for bars and ounces. It is soft, so it is rarely used for everyday jewellery.
22K and 21K
22K (91.6%) is common in India and the Gulf, and 21K (87.5%) is the most popular in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Both combine high value with enough durability for jewellery.
18K
Contains 75% gold, is harder, and is preferred for gem-set and detailed designs, with a lower price per gram.
Which karat should I choose?
For saving and investment, 24K bars usually carry lower making charges. For everyday jewellery, 21K or 18K fits depending on taste and budget.
